What a beautiful piece. Your visit to the China Market sounds delightful. I made this chicken dish for my husband, a lover of spice. The two green chilies I used were serranos—maybe a chili with less spice was intended—but he adored it!!
Ahhh Debora, we share a love of Testi (also one of the hugest things I miss about living in Stokey) and green pepper in things. I miss the onion salad and dipped bread so much. We are lucky that there’s a very decent, proper ocakbasi Turkish here right by the sea front, but good as it is, it’s not a patch on Testi, which is so bloody hard to beat. It’s just the best.
Nice to read about places familiar to me. I used to live on the Haringey ladder. Have also spent time in Béziers and marsellain also nearby village Autinac
Love reading these vibrant snippets of life in France followed by delicious recipes!
Question: I started with a thumb sized piece of ginger and it was 19 grams. I added to make 59 grams. It was a lot and I had to add more of other ingredients to balance flavor (for my taste). Which got me to wondering if ginger I got here in US (maine) could be less fresh and therefore drier and lighter than what you used. Not sure where mine is grown but these days produce up here is a bit sad this time of year.
I love living in Montana but oh! my kingdom for a 99 Ranch Market within a day's drive -- the magnificence of a real Asian food market.
I'm off to Paris the beginning of March for writing and Mark Rothko reasons, and I got a flat in Belleville because I wanted kebabs and Asian food (also, I get too tired when travelling alone and trying to speak French to go out for a full dinner at 9).
Oh I love this Debora and it delights me so that you loved the Turkish restaurants. Please could you let lovely Thane know the following she may also want to add to her list:
1) Durak Tantuni @duraktantunisalonu for tantunis
📍 390 W Green Road, London N15 3PX
(not on Green Lanes itself but just off it)
2) Haringey Corbacisi @haringeycorbacisi for soup
📍 7 Salisbury Promenade, Green Lanes, London N8 0RX
3) Gözleme House for gözleme and manti
📍 24 Green Lanes, London N4 1LG
4) Cyprus House in the Turkish Cypriot Community Association (TCCA) for everything they've got
It may not be statistically accurate, but I always notice a high proportion of comments come from other Debs, Deborah's, Debra's, Debora's, Debbie's etc? Any one else notice this or am I just sensitive? .......Deborah H !! PS Another delicious sounding recipe, thanks other Debora!!
Loved this, Debora! We love living in France, but we do get homesick for the ethnic foods we enjoy where we live in the US -- Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern and Mexican. We'll have to stop at the China Market when we visit Béziers. -- Debra Kuntz
Excellent piece. I used to live in Islington and frequently ate at what we called The Sultan's Armpit on Essex Road. Can't remember the proper name but I remember they didn't mind toddlers crawling on the floor (during the day). Did you ever go there?
I don't think so... I think it would have rung a bell 😊 All of the Turkish restaurants in Hackney are so lovely with young children. And the shops too - our greengrocer's gave all little children pieces of fruit, especially bananas.

We have a fabulous world market in Indianapolis, Saraga, and this looks a great deal like one of my bi-monthly hauls.
I will be making your lovely chicken dish with the 2 poussin I’ve been trying to decide what to with, so thank you for that.
I really enjoy your writing.
Keep up the wonderful job.

What a fabulous looking basket! I am just the same...always buy more than I need too.
This is very useful for those of us confused by those big markets (like me)
For some reason I haven’t got last Saturday’s article- could I have missed it?

Marseillan Market AND China Market. Spoiled with choices.
Thanks Debora. Love west Dorset but sometimes miss the Turkish community in Islington.
I loved living in that part of London so much.
Just reading this article tastes delicious! X

Debbie, that is so funny. I HAD noticed. I wonder if it is a generational thing? I imagine we are all about the same age.
Yes! Children or the 60’s like Dawn’s and Wendy’s !!
My mum is a 1940s Wendy - ahead of the trend 😊

It is definitely worth a visit, D. I found it very inspiring.

You are so welcome!
