I have no market haul this week because I’m in London for a few days, visiting my old life. But I do offer you an easy recipe for a Turkish-ish breakfast.
But now I need to know where you went for bangbiang noodles in chilli sauce, crab linguine, and dim sum! This is so evocative. I live in west London but love going to east London and eating all over.
Ooh I love menemen/shakshuka… some say that if you don’t scramble the eggs, just before you are ready to serve them you break them whirling them around the pan a little with a fork, so that’s what I always do 😋
Loved the evocative feel of this piece, Deborah. When my husband, daughter and I visited home from the Middle East, it was as though we had two parallel lives. Great to slip in and out of both. I am happily now ensconced in Herefordshire.
We lived in Normandy for a while ( a very happy time of our lives) and I remember the visits home and to Boots - the joy! That said, I now relish a visit to a French Pharmacy and the kitchen department of a big supermarket when we go back to France.
Isn’t it both wonderful & odd to return? I have been back & forth a lot this last year. I am grateful it’s so easy to get my amatriciana & ramen fix but I am looking forward to really settling in Venice soon
Loved this! Ages ago I used to live down the road, in various places around Ridley Road market. Reading about how easy it feels slipping back into your old life there, I have the exact same experience whenever I return, as if my current life was just a hiccup in time. It's felt the same way as you describe for the last 15 years since I left. It's strange how some places just don't leave our hearts.
Much as I enjoyed the no 73 in my previous life, I have no inclination to board it again. I understand your feelings about your previously loved home but ours, like yours, is no longer home. I have no inclination to even see our old cottage now. Orkney is home, now and hopefully forever. But, as always, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your musings Debora.

Loving the sound of the Turkish-ish breakfast!

You're sounding wistful. But think of the rain and the politics. xx

“You can’t step in the same river twice” - what a great expression
